Overview

The HUAC-803 measures the distance to faults in power cables, so repair crews know where to look before they dig. It finds open circuits, low-resistance faults, high-resistance faults and flashover faults in cables at substations, power plants and industrial sites, and helps utilities and electrical contractors restore supply faster and keep excavation to a minimum.

Two measuring methods

  • Low-voltage pulse (TDR): the instrument sends a pulse down the cable and measures the time until the reflection from the fault returns. It is used for open circuits and low-resistance faults, over cable lengths up to 8 km.
  • Pulse current method: for high-resistance and flashover faults, which do not reflect a low-voltage pulse, a high-voltage surge generator breaks the fault down and the instrument records the current transient travelling between the fault and the test end. Range up to 128 km.

Sampling at 200 MHz and pulse widths adjustable from 10 ns to 10 µs give a resolution of better than ±1 m on cables under 1 km, and an error below 0.5 % on longer cables, with a blind zone of only 2 m. Automatic mode finds the fault quickly; manual mode lets experienced engineers adjust the parameters and cursors with the rotary encoder.

The 7-inch TFT display, at 750 cd/m² with a 160° viewing angle, stays readable in direct sunlight. Waveforms are stored in the instrument and can be copied to a PC over USB for analysis and reports. A 7.4 V lithium-ion battery, adjustable backlight and automatic shutdown give a long working time in the field, and the instrument comes in a rugged carrying case.

For prelocation and pinpointing of high-resistance faults with a complete system, see the HUAC-2163 multi-pulse cable fault location system; for sheath faults, the high voltage bridge cable fault locator.

Frequently asked questions

Which method should I use?

Use the low-voltage pulse (TDR) method for open circuits and low-resistance faults. High-resistance and flashover faults do not reflect a low-voltage pulse, so use the pulse current method together with a high-voltage surge generator that breaks the fault down.

How accurate is the distance?

Better than ±1 m on cables under 1 km, and an error below 0.5 % on longer cables. The blind zone near the instrument is 2 m.

Does it pinpoint the exact spot to dig?

The HUAC-803 measures the distance along the cable. To find the exact spot on the ground, follow up with an acoustic pinpointer, such as the one supplied with the HUAC-2163 system.

Can the waveforms be saved?

Yes. Waveforms are stored in the instrument and can be copied to a PC over USB for analysis and reports.
